Yesterday President Bush gave his final press conference. I missed some of it but enjoyed what I saw. It seemed that he finally was able to give some answers that he’s probably been wanting to give for years.
I like President Bush. I have a confession to make though. Just over eight years ago, when the country was choosing between him and Al Gore, I didn’t vote for him. Those were my “unenlightened” years, my years of thinking of myself as a liberal. Problem was, I didn’t agree with all the planks of the Democratic Party platform, but I mistakenly thought, as many do today, that the Democratic Party was for the “common man”, and the Republican Party was that of the “country club rich and elite, big business, money-is-everything” faction.
I was not too happy when George W. Bush was declared the winner of the election, and my new president. Less than one year later, though, he won me over in an instant. On September 14, 2001, he climbed up on that pile of rubble at Ground Zero, took that bullhorn and said to the crowd of rescue workers, who were calling out that they couldn’t hear him, “I can hear you. The rest of the world hears you. And the people who knocked these buildings down will hear all of us soon.” In that moment, watching that on TV, I knew, as clearly as I knew my own name, that this was the reason he had been elected president. I also knew without a doubt that I was very, very glad that he was my president.
I’d like to publicly thank President Bush for keeping this country safe from terrorist attacks for more than seven years now. I’m not sure anyone else could have accomplished this.
Thank you Mr. President for your never-failing optimism in America, and what she means, to us and to the rest of the world. Thank you for loving this country, and for serving her, and all of us, with the courage to do what is right even when it’s not popular.
Thank you for protecting me and my family. It’s as simple as that.
I believe that history will be more honest in its assessment of his presidency than our left-leaning main-stream media has been. At least, the history that I will tell will be.
God bless you, President Bush, and your gracious First Lady Laura. I wish both of you good health, happiness, and the satisfaction of a job well-done as you retire from political life.

Absolutely right. Now (as we all know) Obama wants to shut down Guantanamo, even though we know 61 former inmates returned to terrorism (that we know of).

Oh my gosh…pup! I have been planning on writing to the President and Mrs. Bush expressing these same sentiments. I finally got a card today and am going to send it, but I never thought of putting it on my blog…I am so glad you did!!! I wholeheartedly concur with everything you said…(except for the part about not voting for him in 2000!). This is a great post.
Smelly Tourist,
Thanks for your comment. You’re right. I hope and pray that all that President Bush has done to keep us safe won’t be undone in about a month after Jan. 20. I took a look at your blog; loved it! Love your humor and sounds like we think alike on things. Glad you stopped by.
Kathy,
Thank you. I had the same thought as you, and am planning on writing to the President and Mrs. Bush, once they get back to Texas. Was sort of afraid if I sent it now, it would get lost in the shuffle. Then I just wanted to put it here. I feel so strongly about this. Thanks for your very kind words.
hi pup
what a wonderful post. i feel the same way. i think we are going to miss him and laura terribly when they leave and we’re stuck with the obamas. i think W has been treated so poorly and it literally pains me when i think about it. i am planning to write him too and thank him for HIS service to this great land.
thanks for visiting my blog! yours is awesome as well.
Hi Kate,
Thanks for the visit and for the comment! I’m glad you agree. I hope he and Laura get millions of thank-you letters; I hope they get so many that it takes them the rest of the year to read them all. I sometimes feel so sad for him (and her) for the extremely unjust and harsh talk about him; it would hurt me, if it were me. But, I get the feeling that he just shrugs it off, and that they both know better. I hope so, anyway.
