Our New Best Friends–Castro, Ortega, Chavez

by Conservative Pup on June 30, 2009

Apparently, America now officially supports people who are constitutionally elected by their democratic societies,  who then try to change their countries’ constitutions illegally.

The situation in Honduras seems pretty clear-cut to me.  For my liberal loved ones whose favorite news sources might not have covered this fully, the president of Honduras, Mel Zelaya, decided to follow the lead of his good friend, Hugo Chavez, and change the Honduras constitution so that he, Zelaya, could remain president for longer than the constitutional limit.  When the attorney general of Honduras, the Congress of Honduras, and the Supreme Court of Honduras all informed him that there was a legal method in place for changing the constitution, but that the power to do that didn’t belong to the president, Zelaya decided to do it anyway.  He had his friend Chavez ship him ballots and was going to proceed with an illegal election, when the military, following orders from the Supreme Court, arrested him and shipped him to Costa Rica.

The Honduran Congress and Supreme Court are proceeding strictly according to their constitution.  They plan to hold elections as planned in November.

The outcome of this is still very much up in the air.

One things seems clear to me.  This is not a “military coup,” as it has been described by our president and much of the mainstream news sources.  This is a country determined not to let one man destroy its constitution and liberty.

The president of my country said of this, “We believe that the coup was not legal and that President Zelaya remains the democratically elected president there.”

Maybe there was a better way to remove, or stop, him without using the military.  Perhaps impeachment, or some other official proceeding would have been seen differently.  I doubt it, though.

By using the military to remove him and physically send him out of the country, Honduras has unfortunately left the door wide open for leftist world leaders to denounce and decry their attempt to protect their constitution and laws.  Describing this action as a “military coup” takes away a lot of credibility and validity of their actions in the eyes of the world.

I don’t know anything about Honduran politics.  I don’t know anything about their constitution, the honesty and character of the members of their Congress, or the integrity of their Supreme Court justices.  I don’t actually know who’s right and who’s wrong in this dispute.    I do know that Castro, Daniel Ortega, and Hugo Chavez are not known as advocates for freedom and liberty for the individual citizen.  If they’re against it, then reason and logic tells me that I’m for it.  When our president takes the same side as these fellows, it makes me uncomfortable, to say the least.

Being able to call it a “military coup” gives them permission to denounce it.

Yep, and we are doing the same thing…except as far as I’m concerned, there’s a question about the constitutionally elected part in the 2008 elections…there’s always the eligibility question with O being a British subject at birth…of course, I’m sure he’s making sure all that info is scrubbed…but then, there’s always his book that talks about it…

I’m glad the military and the Honduran people weren’t afraid to enforce their own laws…something we are not doing these days.

Pup,

I am with you. This in no way makes me feel comfortable . I do not know anything about Honduran politics, and you can probably bet neither did President Obama, until he was given a crash course by his aides.

I don’t like the idea that we are siding with Chavez and Castro on this at all. What do they know at all about Liberty and Freedom?

I now call Obama, Chavez, and Castro the Axis of American Marxists.

Great post Pup!
