“If you ask me to name the proudest distinction of Americans, I would choose–because it contains all the others–the fact that they were the people who created the phrase ‘to make money.’ No other language or nation had ever used these words before; men had always thought of wealth as a static quantity–to be seized, begged, inherited, shared, looted or obtained as a favor. Americans were the first to understand that wealth has to be created. The words ‘to make money’ hold the essence of human morality.”
I love these words. They were written in 1957 by Ayn Rand, in her epic book, “Atlas Shrugged.” I am currently reading it for the first time, having somehow missed it up till now. I’ve always heard of it, but just never got around to reading it. I am enjoying it thoroughly, and am amazed at how timely it is today.
Especially today. PBO has an agenda, and it’s not his alone, but he is the face of it. Backed by the extreme wealth of George Soros, the long-established radical left with Obama as their spokesman and public figurehead are having their long-awaited opportunity to change this country dramatically, fundamentally, and finally.
Capitalism is not some new idea that we’ve only been experimenting with for a few decades. This country was founded based on religious liberty and rebellion against excessive and unjust taxation. The stealing of profits. More than two centuries ago, this country was settled and set up as the most free country ever seen. It is no accident or coincidence that capitalism flourished here as well. Liberty and capitalism are partners in a free society, and without one, the other can’t survive.
Our free market, and hence, our liberty, is under attack right now. Right under our noses, right out in the open. The perpetrators, our radical left minority, are counting on a majority of American citizens: 1) not paying attention; 2) not understanding what’s going on; 3) being so dependent upon government that they will never vote for a change because they will have forgotten how to support themselves.
It is discouraging to see such a large number of fellow Americans think that they want what Obama’s selling. (and I don’t mean a GM car) It is sad that so many have given up on the American dream. You know, that dream that says that anyone can achieve success, even great success, with hard work and perserverence.
The people are of one of two minds: they either see a fixed pie of wealth and believe that they can’t get their fair share unless government sees to it that they do; or, they see no limit to either the size of the pie or the number of pies that can be created. I’ve written about this before, and still think that this is a basic fundamental difference in those who want whatever they can get and those who want the freedom to make whatever they can make.
“Get” or “make.” That is what it boils down to, those who want to get and those who want to make. In “Atlas Shrugged” this is the theme and I don’t know how that story will end. I don’t know how America’s story will proceed either, but I at least have some say in that. America’s story is not finished and we all are the authors of it.
This present time is the chapter that will record how close America came to socialism. The next chapter will tell how ‘we the people’ rebelled against unjust and unconstitutional policies and America became herself again.
It’s the new American dream. Live it and share it.

Great post, Pup – JohnGaltLives approves of your reading material, too. I’ve blogged about this very thing myself. The essence of America is that we’re free men and women, and NO ONE has the right to tell us how to live, where to work, or how much of our own property and profit we’re “allowed” to keep. There’s a big old nasty fight a comin’, and we’ll just have to see how it plays out. May God have mercy on America!
JohnGaltLives,
Thanks for coming by and for your comment! I’m so glad (not surprised, just glad) that you share belief in this basic founding principle. And I love your “name” and your blog! I’m reading ‘Atlas’ as fast as I can, it’s fascinating.
Thanks again!
Pup
We were not raised by our parents to expect the government to give us a hand out. We were raised to work hard & figure out how to support ourselves. All these hand outs cripple people from being the best they can be. Thank you for your blogs!
Thanks Lucy for coming by and for the great comment! I have thought for a long time, that what the Dems/libs/socialists do is enable poverty and cripple and steal integrity, initiative, and motivation from lots of Americans. This enabling, which is not productive nor healthy, is definitely NOT in the best interest of the one being enabled.
Thanks again, I appreciate it.
Why isn’t anyone stopping Obama and his cronies from changing our constitution…at the G-20, giving away our freedom, we fought to be free from European rule, now he has given it back to them They will be able to control our banking system, etc.. He has broken our law, by making banks take the tarp money when they didn’t need it, by threatening to audit them for 5 yrs., then when they took it, wanted to pay the money back with interest…the gov. would not take it!!! That is against our law…Judge Napolitano, Fox News….I heard it from him!! Why are we letting him socialize our country and maybe even further…to dictatorship!! Respectfully, Barbara
Why isn’t anyone in our country or government stopping Obama and the democrats from changing our constitution? I am sure you have seen the news from the G-20, we fought to be free of European rule, now we are going to be under their rules again, thanks to Obama. The tarp money was forced on some banks, not needing it, but was told if they didn’t accept it, they would have a 5 yr. audit..so they took the money, then tried to repay it with interest and our gov. would not accept it. Why, I believe because Obama wants nationalization of our banking system. Socialism is about here, and what is after that??? Respectfully, Barbara
Hi Barbara,
You ask why isn’t anyone stopping Obama. I can’t give you a good answer except to say that I believe there are millions of us trying to stop him. I am trying to stop him. How? By writing this blog, by calling my senators and congressmen/women, by informing myself of the characteristics of socialism so that I recognize it when I see it. Hopefully, I can share what I learn here so that if even one person reads something I write and thinks, ‘hmmmm, well maybe she’s right’ then that will have been the whole purpose of writing this blog.
I know it seems like no one is doing anything, but the Dems have the voting power right now, and what we can do is work hard for the next year or so to get conservatives elected in 2010. We can expose what they are doing to anyone who will listen. We can pay attention to the news, the real news, as you do, and tell anyone who doesn’t know what is going on, that they need to pay attention too.
Thank you for coming by and for your passionate comments. I truly believe “all is not lost.” But we do have some hard work ahead of us, staying on top of our elected persons and helping to vote out the bad ones.
Keep the faith, we can do it!
Pup
Hi Pup, great post, as usual. I believe our country has raised a generation (or two) of children who have had everything given to them (at least in the upper class elitist homes). Personal responsibility was not required. Add that to school systems with social indoctrination agendas, colleges with radical agendas, and what do you get? Our current situation. And a president who grew up in those systems. The progressives got it right…take over the public school systems and the institutes of higher learning. They have been planning THIS takeover for a very long time. How else could a scumbag criminal like Bill Ayers be a “highly respected” professor on a college campus? He was needed for the “revolution” and need not take personal responsibility for anything….but there is still a God in heaven….I hear some of his old crimes are being investigated anew. We may yet see justice. Now that’s Change I can believe in!
Great comment, Kathy! I completely agree with you. Conservatives need to do what the radicals have been doing for 40 years or more; go into the fields of media and education, and work from within.
Thanks!
