I had one of those “ah-ha!” moments the other day. Actually, it was more of an “oh-no!” eye-opening realization that I’m embarrassed to admit.
For months, longer even, while watching or reading the news, I would see some story about the Dems’ plans to save the economy, and would just shake my head, and wonder “how can they be so stupid?” I’ve even contemplated sending some of them a Milton Friedman book, because their economic ideas are so contrary to basic laws of finance. They just seemed to have a total lack of understanding, and I thought they were just very stupid, frustratingly so.
But now I realize with a jolt that it’s much more serious than just stupidity. The Dems aren’t stupid. (Well, I’m convinced that Nancy Pelosi is.) No, they aren’t stupid and unseeing. It’s worse than that.
They know economic principles. They even understand them. They know that tax cuts across the board will put more money into both government’s coffers and individual’s pockets. They even likely know that the free market creates jobs much better and more reliably than government. They do know this.
No, the scary part is that they do know this, and that’s why they don’t follow these sound principles. They don’t want the free market to succeed. They know that capitalism works, but that’s not how they want the country to work. They must fight against capitalism, against the free market and the economic stability, prosperity, and security that brings to a society. They fight against this because it is the direct opposite of socialism, collectivism, and the enormous power they believe that will bring to them.
Individual prosperity is what they fear most. When a self-reliant, self-motivated, self-starter is willing to work hard at his own idea for a business, and brings that idea to harvest, and begins to earn money, both for himself and for the others he employs, he wants to keep as much of it as he can. He (or she) earned it, worked hard for it, voluntarily. He doesn’t “need” the government to take care of him, and this is what the left fears most: citizens who don’t “need” government, who neither need nor want to rely on government for basic needs.
The left needs as many American citizens as possible to depend on governmental intervention. This is the only way they can attain the power they so crave.
I am more than a little embarrassed that I didn’t see this from the very start. Oh, I understood the concept of “buying votes” with government assistance programs. But I mistakenly thought that we were headed for socialism out of political stupidity, people making laws and policies who didn’t know any better; people who didn’t know history, and didn’t understand the consequences of their plans. The realization that it is much more than just “buying votes” and is indeed a full-blown socialist agenda to do away entirely with capitalism as we know it has helped me to stop being so frustrated with the Dems’ stupidity. They aren’t stupid. I can now put my energies where they belong, fighting policies intended to take us toward socialism, rather than trying to figure out how to educate Pelosi.
What a waste of time that would be.

Hi pup, excellent post, as usual. Yes, I am lately, I think, having my own epiphany….I am seeing that (gasp), can it actually be true that putting more people on the dole is actually a way to increase the voting base? Hmmm…yes, I think that could possibly be the strategy. For a number of years there has been that faction in the Democrat party always pushing further and further to the left and towards Socialism. They hate capitalism and free markets and they are dedicated to getting their agenda into mainstream politics. In my little country township, I see conservatives who vote Democrat who are bewildered at their choices…this is not what they signed up for. I think they do not realize that, as a whole, their party has been hijacked by a pushy, belligerent, authoritarian, socialist left that is determined to make the U. S. of A. into a socialist economic system…or worse. I believe communist party believers are in the ranks too. The Democrat (I hesitate to label it the democrat-ic) party has been the easiest to invade with it’s feel good, emotional, no absolutes, liberal thinking, where the Republican party has always stood on the side of liberty, free markets, business interests (because that creates jobs), and at least some principles, even if all did not adhere to them. These pushy, belligerent, far lefties scream the loudest of all, which is why I suppose they gets lots of attention, as in, the squeaky wheel gets the grease.
Great comment. I totally agree that there are surely communists within the democrat party (I’m not going to call it democratic either). They’ve been working toward this for a long time, decades. They undoubtably think that finally now is their best shot. What you said about the squeaky wheel is so true. These radical leftists are a minority, but they (and the media) make it seem like they are the majority.
Thanks Kathy.
