Dan Boren Stands With Nancy Pelosi, Votes to Adjourn Without Voting On Tax Cuts

by Pup on September 29, 2010

“House Democrats on Wednesday barely won a 210-209 vote to adjourn the House without extending the Bush tax cuts.”

Did you catch that?  The Dems won the vote to adjourn without voting on whether or not our taxes will rise in January.  By one vote.  210 to 209.

And all Oklahomans, especially those living and voting in the 2nd District, need to know that Dan Boren voted to adjourn.  Just as Nancy Pelosi wanted him to.

He did not stand with 39 of his fellow Democrats, who joined Republicans in their attempt to responsibly vote on an issue that affects all Americans, including each one of us here in Oklahoma.

Dan Boren stood with the leadership of his party, Nancy Pelosi.  He did not stand with tax-paying Oklahomans who work, own small and large businesses, and work their farms.

His one vote would have made the difference.

Never think that one vote doesn’t matter.  Your one vote matters.

Dr. Charles Thompson, a veterinarian living in Hulbert, OK, and the winner of a six-way GOP primary, is challenging Boren for the job of representing the people of eastern Oklahoma.  Dr. Thompson was born and raised in Oklahoma; during his high school years he played in the band, played football, was active in FFA, hauled hay, and cut firewood.  He went into the Army after high school; he went in as a private and retired a Major, having received a direct commission.  He had the honor, during his Army career, of serving in The Old Guard, the Army’s Official Ceremonial Unit and Escort to the President.

Dr. Thompson has served his country, been a small business owner with his private veterinarian practice, has been married for 20 years and has three children.  He is active in his church and in his community.  He enjoys the outdoors and is a hunter and a fisherman.

This is just a short version of his biography and qualifications.  Read more here.

His stand is clear and unequivocal.  From his website:

“Charles believes there are many opportunities for improvement regarding the federal government. He is dedicated to the principles of liberty and will work tirelessly to ensure the Constitution is protected. Charles is strongly in favor of a smaller federal government resulting in stronger state, local and individual rights. He is adamantly opposed to government-run healthcare, TARP, Cap & Trade and the bailouts. He believes the United States and its citizens perform best when not burdened by excessive taxes or heavy-handed regulations.”

To be fair, Boren hasn’t been as bad as most Democrats.  But he let us all down today, with his failure to stand up for all of us here in Oklahoma who will be hurt by tax increases.  Dan Boren voted along with Nancy Pelosi to go home without tackling the issue of whether or not to raise our taxes in January.  It was an irresponsible decision, and it was a cowardly one.  Oklahoma needs all her representatives to take firm and unwavering stands for those they represent.

I think we should give Charles Thompson the opportunity to serve Oklahoma.  He sounds like a man who will face the issues head-on.

Rather than voting to just adjourn and go home.

Boren is taking vote for granted. I will call his office to find out why he did what he did.

Hi Arlene, thanks for the comment.

I called Boren’s office late yesterday afternoon, while working on this post, and asked about his vote. They said they would ask him and for me to call back. I just got off the phone with a spokeswoman at his DC office, and basically she said, and I’m paraphrasing, ‘even though he had urged the leadership to vote to extend all the tax cuts, he could see that it was not going to be brought up for a vote, even if the measure to not adjourn passed. So he voted to adjourn.’

I told the spokeswoman that his vote was a disappointment, and I still didn’t really understand why he would vote to adjourn, if he really wanted it brought up for a vote. I told her it didn’t sound like he felt very strongly about it, or if he did, he didn’t act very courageously. Please do call, they need to hear from us.

I say fire the dim bulbs (Democrats) that voted to adjourn without doing what they were hired to do. I know I would have been fired if I didn’t do my job.
