Cake Or Steak

by Pup on February 25, 2009

Just a few thoughts on the two speeches last night.  One, the first one, was just as I expected.  Lofty rhetoric, delivered in that familiar pitch-perfect way, with words and phrases that are easy to understand, but leaves me thinking afterward, now what did he say?  Like meringue on pie, very fluffy, sweet-tasting, but of no real substance.  But perfectly presented.

The other speech, following the first, was filled with words expressing beliefs and ideas I agree with, ideas that are real.  The delivery could have been better, but the substance was genuine.  A good steak, not perfectly round or even perfectly cooked, but food that is real and nourishes for the long haul.

I’ve read a lot of comments this morning, both from liberals and conservatives, criticizing Bobby Jindal’s speech as he gave the Republican response to PBO’s plate of meringue and cake.  My own thoughts are that I would rather have a steak that isn’t perfectly pretty than the most beautifully decorated piece of cake.  I need real nourishment and this country does too.  Gov. Jindal may or may not be a candidate for president in 2012, but I certainly hope he is.  I hope Gov. Palin is as well.

Delivery of a speech can be affected by many things.  Personally, I thought it seemed as if he felt rushed.  But, if you are feeling disappointed this morning that he didn’t “sound” as charasmatic and exciting and inspiring as PBO, just think about this.  Would you rather have the actor who plays a hero, or the real hero?

Cake or steak.  Hero or actor.  I want the real thing, whomever it ends up being for us in 2012.
