NOW, the National Organization for (of?) Women, has lost both credibility and relevance over the past many years. As I recall, they began with wanting equal pay for equal work for women, expanded opportunities in the corporate world, and equal treatment under the law in all situations. All innocuous enough goals, even laudable. I was never a member of NOW, didn’t pay too much attention to them, but saw no reason to disagree with their stands on equality.
Today, and for the past several years, NOW and other so-called ‘feminist’ groups have devolved into nothing but a loose coalition of pro-abortion groups. That is their only focus, their sole agenda. We don’t hear much from NOW these days, as they only rarely weigh in on actual horrific treatment of women. I can’t recall hearing much from them on the terrible plight of women in Afghanistan and Iran, and other Muslim countries. These days they only speak out against women who choose not to have an abortion.
A coalition of groups including the Women’s Media Center, NOW, The Feminist Majority, and others are all upset by the announced airing of an ad during the Super Bowl that will tell the remarkable story of Tim Tebow, and how his mother rejected a doctor’s recommendation that she abort him. Tebow is a fine young man now, a superstar college football player whom I hope we see in the NFL one of these days.
Whatever team he lands on, I will become its newest fan.
Tim and his mother Pam have principles and moral courage that is uplifting. Jehmu Greene, the president of the Women’s Media Center, is worried that this ad which “uses sports to divide rather than to unite has no place in the biggest national sports event of the year — an event designed to bring Americans together.”
I didn’t know that the Super Bowl was “designed to bring Americans together.” I thought it was a huge money-making event because so many of us love football. But that’s beside the point.
Terry O’Neill, president of the National Organization for Women, condemned the planned ad as “extraordinarily offensive and demeaning.”
For decades, these groups have been explicitly insistent on calling themselves pro-choice rather than pro-abortion. We should all assume then, that what they support is choice, a woman’s right to choose, as they themselves emphasize, rather than one particular choice only. Why do they find it divisive, offensive, and demeaning to hear about one of many choices available to women who are pregnant? And why are they so fearful of women across America hearing about the different and varied choices available to pregnant women?
They call themselves ‘pro-choice’ while in reality support only one choice. Abortion.
They rant and rail about an ad they haven’t even seen yet. These self-described pro-choice women are ranting and railing about an ad describing one choice one woman made. They behave and speak as though Tim Tebow’s words will damage women’s health and do women everywhere a grave injustice.
How insulting to women. NOW, the Women’s Media Center, and the Feminist Majority must not have a very high opinion of women’s intelligence and judgement, if they believe that we must not be allowed to even see and hear about one choice one woman made.
They must think we are absolutely stupid.
A pro-choice group is afraid and enraged that women might hear something positive about one of the choices available to them.
They rant and rail because she didn’t choose abortion. They pretend to be something they’re not. Why?
Because they know that the majority of Americans oppose abortion.
As an ardent advocate and supporter of free speech I am not calling for them to be silent, but for them to proudly claim and wear the pro-abortion label that more accurately describes them.
I applaud CBS for this, and called their main office yesterday to express my thanks to them for planning to run the ad, and asked them not to change their minds based on a few irrelevant powerless groups of people with narrow views.

Hey Pup, I’m thinking the label “pro-choice” in this situation just points out their obvious obtuseness and delusion…they are NOT pro-choice…unless it agrees with them. :=) Actually, the label makes them look quite ignorant….and catches them red handed.
They want it their way or no way at all. The want to bully everyone that doesn’t agree with them that they are right. Won’t happen. These types of groups make women look bad. Just my opinion.
Have a terrific day.
You also didn’t mention the fact that what they call people who don’t believe in abortion: anti choice. Are they anti life?
Wouldn’t anti life be the opposite of anti choice? It seems to make sense to me.
Thanks for the comments. Yep, “anti-life” would be another good name for what they really are. I’m sure we’ve all noticed how all those liberal groups, legislative bill, etc all have names that are directly opposite what they really are. “Fairness Doctrine,” “Pro-choice,” ’stimulus bill.” They just call it whatever it isn’t, because they know that what it is, we aren’t for.
It’s interesting to me that groups like NOW take full advantage of the First Amendment when it is in their best interests. However when an opposing opinion takes advantage of the First Amendment – groups like NOW kick back and howl.
Hypocrits – on so many levels.
